- Gravity retaining walls
By far the most popular type of retaining wall due it’s simplicity of design & cost-effectiveness. Constructed with a thick base, materials are stacked against each other with a slight lean using a process called battering. Preferred materials for this kind of retaining wall include concrete, brick and stone, however timber can also be used for smaller retaining walls. - Anchored retaining walls
This is a specific type of retaining wall for those looking to hold back quite a large mass of earth, but don’t have the space for a gravity retaining wall. The method uses cables that are embedded into concrete to connect the top and bottom of the wall. While anchored retaining walls can be installed using the same type of materials as gravity retaining walls, they are often more expensive as they are more difficult to install. - Cantilever retaining walls
Cantilever retaining walls provide extra stability thanks to the slab foundation which is in the shape of a “T”. The downward pressure from the soil above puts pressure on the slab foundation which prevents the retaining wall & soil from moving. This is the preferred retaining wall type for this looking for a little extra strength and rigidity.
